Science

Emma's Bio teacher did an experiment, and just like when she was at Spectrum School, she always wants to repeat these experiments at home. So after school on Tuesday we had to stop by a store to purchase gummy bears.

The experiment is about osmosis --sugar and water. But the end result is really big gummy bears.

Emma tells me that they don't taste very good after the sugar has migrated out, and the water has migrated in :-) But weirdly big gummy bears appealed to her.
They're a little freaky, yes?
The one that got biggest was done in distilled water. The smaller ones were just tap water. So, diffusion works better in pure water. :-)

  1. It's interesting to me that the biggest one did not lose its shape and become a big blob.

    Hooray for home science experiments that do not involve insects or smelly things or growing mold!

    This reminds me of when my son made a model of a cell using jello and candy. It looked fun right after we added the candy, but the next day it looked disgusting because the candy had soaked up a lot of water.

    1. Emma is also making a model of the cell, but now it's all online, via something (really!) called a Prezi.

  2. They look sort of like zombie gummy bears. I remember when my kids had science projects - I wasn't smart enough to keep my distance. The results weren't pretty.

  3. I love that she doesn't get her fill of science at school, and must continue it at home. I would think that would make her so fun to teach.

  4. My kids have left me notes just like that one! But they've not done (at least not to my knowledge) any experiments with gummi bears. This was interesting to me, even if you can't eat the results. I wonder if it would work with salt water?
